Malaysian tech geek’s prophecy: We’ve entered the age of Google search engine downfall

AN ICT (information communications technology) enthusiast has lambasted the Google Search engine as “having gone overboard” in that complacency has crept in after it has become the default search engine for majority of global folks.

“Imagine, now the top four Google Search are only advertisements like these results below. In fact, the size of these ads is actually getting bigger compared to the last two to three years,” observed Faisal Rahim (@acaiijawa) in a post on the X platform.

“If you want other additional information, you’ve to scroll down (other action needed).”

In fact, Faisal recalled that in the past, there would only be “a maximum of two lines of ads” but Google Search gradually added a box on the side with the word Ads but now “they’re toying with 100% ad view pages”.

“If the search is related to products, it would be more extreme. The top results are all advertisements. Worse still, after the big Carousell ad, the results after that are still Sponsored,” he revealed.

“The scariest thing is that many users have shared that Google Search’s results other than Sponsored are ‘deliberately’ being made inaccurate. This is something very unbecoming.

“In the case of specific results, notably size, colour or special features, the most accurate search results are displayed through paid ads only. Organic websites no longer come out with the right results (done on purpose).”

Alternative search engine

Indirectly, Faisal reckoned that Google wants everyone to start searching for goods and make purchases through Google Search results only.

“This is actually Google’s ultimate business model. They’ve our data, understand our behaviour, know trends and many advertisers can afford to pay to advertise there. Even worse, they will be aided by AI (artificial intelligence),” lamented the occasional finfluencer.

“But many people don’t realise this as Google has become their default search engine that they can rely upon daily.”

As an alternative, Faisal revealed that there are many search engine options out there such as Brave, DuckDuckGo, Startpage, Torch and ChatGPT, to name a few.

“You will be surprised that their results are sometimes much better than Google Search,’ claimed Faisal.

“I personally use DuckDuckGo as my default search engine. You can compare the search results I obtained with that of Google. It directly provided the information that I required.”

In conclusion, Faisal contended that Google Search is the best example that “nothing is free in the world”.

“You’ll eventually become a product of Google without realising it. You’ll be ‘sold’ to advertisers who’re racing to increase their company’s profits,” he asserted. “As a result, Google makes billions a year selling our data as advertisements. 77% of Google’s annual profit is from these Ads.”

Added Faisal: “Those who’re aware of this have left Google Search. This is especially so among the tech industry gangs.

“But in the end, it’s up to you whether you want to continue using, reduce usage or replace Google Search entirely as your default search engine based on how informative the search results that you obtained.” – Oct 23, 2024
