Kuala Terengganu’s scamming uncle makes for a cautionary tale for tourists

SCAMMERS come in all shapes and sizes, and for the tourists who visit Kuala Terengganu, they may find themselves becoming the victim of a smooth-talking uncle with a sad story.

In a video posted on X by netizen MALAYSIA MOST VIRAL, a mask wearing uncle could be seen asking two girls for RM40 to pay for the rental of a budget hotel where his son is supposedly staying.

The ladies asked if he had any success asking for help from some other people. He said some of the people he approached told him to wait at the spot, but they never returned.

The video culminated with the ladies giving him RM29. Netizen h4kim3 said tourists to Kuala Terengganu should refrain from making donations to this man.

He added that the man will use the money to buy drugs. “It is best to donate to the people who really need it,” said h4kim3.

“He wears an Adidas shirt, a Reebok cap, and has a healthy body but doesn’t want to work,” said a netizen.

One netizen wondered why the authorities are not taking any action against this man. “He has cheated many people. I see him all the time when I go to Terengganu, since 2018 also,” he said.

Netizen teh o ais limau added that she experienced the same thing at a different location, near the Selayang Hospital.

Apparently the scammer said his wife had just delivered a child and that he needed tissue and pampers. The man asked for RM40 too.

“I checked the notice at the bottom of an apartment and found out it was actually a scam. Many people have been tricked,” she said.

Netizens further pointed out that the man only approaches cars with a number plate from another state.

“Try to go there with an outsider number plate and hear the uncle speak. Then show him this video. I am sure he will run,” said Asyraf.

We really think this is a good idea. As they say it, fight fire with fire. However, with the way the uncle is able to smooth talk his way through a conversation, he should have no trouble finding an excuse out of this.

The best way to curb this behaviour is not to encourage it in the first place, and that means refraining from making any form of donation to this uncle. – Oct 27, 2024
