“Racial slurs against bank clerk must stop at once”

Letter to Editor

I RECENTLY read some very disturbing news – something which should not be happening in this day and age in a multi-racial nation like Malaysia.

In a picket by the National Union of Bank Employees (NUBE), the union highlighted how a bank clerk was allegedly a victim of harassment and blatant racial slurs by a bank executive.

According to NUBE general secretary, J. Solomon, the clerk was subjected to frequent harassment, and rude reactions and called “hak”, a derogatory Cantonese term meaning “black” because of her skin colour.

Despite her cries for help and suffering for months, the management of the bank concerned had turned a blind eye.

Having been subject to such harassment, I feel very strongly for this victim and am deeply disturbed that no action has been taken.

Such harassment if left unchecked, can lead the victim to severe depression and affect them seriously.

It is very disheartening to learn that the bank has not taken the appropriate action to stop such an injustice, while the victim faces a “living hell” each time she comes to work.

Malaysia’s foundation is built on multi-racialism and there is no room for such barbaric acts in our developing society.

I urge the bank concerned and relevant authorities to step in immediately and take all measures necessary to stop this racial abuse.

The victim must also receive all the help necessary to ensure there are no long-term effects of such abuse. – Oct 29, 2024
