What’s the story behind the unbelievably priced RM2 Ayam Gunting?

FRIED chicken is the undeniable, universal comfort food that people just can’t do without.

That being said, even if a person is confined to Malaysia’s gastronomic landscape, there is already a staggering amount of choices to choose from.

However, the Ayam Gunting that dominates the night market and street stalls will always hold a special place in the hearts of Malaysians, particularly those who love fried chicken.

But what happens when the beloved Ayam Gunting comes at a jaw-droppingly cheap price?

Here in a viral video post on X with over 2,800 shares, it has been informed that an uncle in a night market was selling Ayam Gunting at only RM2 per piece. Netizens figuratively ate the post up.

Netizen amighul deghaman who posted it added that the size of the Ayam Gunting was similiar to those sold at RM10 to RM12.

The conversation in the video revealed that the shop in Dutch Square, Malacca opens at 5.30pm from Friday to Sunday. Besides the RM2 Ayam Gunting, the uncle also sells fried squid at RM15.

Netizens heaped praises on the man, although there were a sceptical few who raised questions regarding the viability of his business model.

Also, netizen cats daily couldn’t have written a more flattering comment.

However, the Ayam Gunting experts in the comment section quickly pointed out that the price at RM2 wasn’t that cheap.

“That is ayam satay, bro. Usually people sell those at RM2 only. It is obvious from the banner behind where it is written that the Ayam Gunting was RM12,” said Jemi.

Afiqah further echoed Jemi’s statement, saying that she usually bought these at RM1.50 per piece.

“This is called satay. Those who don’t like the thick filling of a chicken can buy these because it is flat and crunchy,” she added.

Netizen Siu Mei was unimpressed. “This is the normal price for satay ayam. Most of them are found at RM2 as they are thin only. At times you only get the flour but it is still delicious,” she said.

Ev provided an alternative, stating that at the Taipan night market, Setia Alam, people could get two pieces of chicken and two large sausages at RM10.

More than just the maths and all that number crunching, we believe the viral post is very good publicity for the hardworking Ayam Gunting-selling uncle.

But it appears that this is just another fairly priced fried chicken stall now that the Ayam Gunting experts have done their “analysis” and came up with their verdict. —Nov 11, 2024
