THE advent of social media has opened up a whole host of marketing opportunities, not least for SMEs (small and medium entrepreneurs).
However, one donut seller’s attempt at going viral has been met with a flurry of negative responses. The original clip showing the vendor pretending to be in the throes of sexual ecstasy and feigning orgasm has upset quite a number of people.
Many were abhorred by the marketing ploy, saying that underaged kids are following the vendor’s shenanigans.
Some netizens urged that this be reported to the authorities, in particular the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), for promoting smut online.
Among those who were irked by the video was pro-Madani influencer Anwar_My_PMX (@AmenoWorld) who took the time out from posting on political issues to berate the donut seller, who is said to be doing business in Penang.
He asked if the donut seller had no shame whatsoever for carrying out such antics when preparing food.
He also chastised the vendor for influencing younger generation into mimicking his actions (as it is, another video of a young boy trader doing exactly that has surfaced).
Pertama kali aku tengok kat Facebook. Page Halal Foodie tak silap. Masa tu rasa jijik yall. Geli betul cara marketing dia. Rasa nak muntah instead of selera. Tak malu ey buat marketing low class gini? Otak kat mana brother? Kau tu nak jual donut buat cara nak jual donut. pic.twitter.com/x5XuuvV0TF

The damning post by Anwar_My_PMX has generated 793K views, with netizens having plenty to say. More than a few didn’t hold back when describing the donut seller’s actions.
Many were unimpressed by the double entendres used by the donut seller.
One said this was the consequence of a lack of moral grounding during the vendor’s formative years.
One asked what sort of customers would buy his donuts.
Meanwhile, one sarcastically said that there were those who would be ok so long as the product is halal.
What seems to bug most people is that such videos encourage the younger generation of social media addicts to mimic such antics.
It does not take a genius to realise that there would be a backlash. Perhaps that is indeed what the seller intended. – Nov 13, 2024
