MCMC launches cybersecurity guidelines to strengthen Malaysia’s digital resilience

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has introduced the Guidelines on Information and Network Security (INSG) to strengthen cybersecurity in the communications and multimedia industry.

“This approach allows service providers sufficient time to adapt to the INSG and provide feedback for improvement. The INSG is not about adding extra regulations.

“Instead, it aims to enhance the capability and readiness of service providers to manage cyber risks, mitigate data breaches, minimise disruptions through the strengthened network infrastructure, and protect consumers from online harms,” it said.

Although non-mandatory, the guidelines provide a best-practices framework for service providers under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, encouraging them to enhance their cybersecurity readiness, mitigate risks, and protect consumers from online threats.

Developed with input from various stakeholders, including cybersecurity experts and government bodies, the INSG aims to improve network resiliency and trust in Malaysia’s digital ecosystem without imposing additional regulations.

Other industries may also adopt the guidelines for cybersecurity improvements. —Dec 8, 2024
