Cop’s rude gesture during KL’s pro-Palestinian rally goes viral alongside sexual harassment accusation

THE public image of Malaysian cops is taking a battering recently. There was the admission of an investigating officer (IO) deleting crucial evidence in a murder trial.

Now there is an image of a police officer (identified as a Lance Corporal (LCpl) Faris from the Wangsa Maju police station) purportedly making a rude gesture at protestors who showed up at the US Embassy in a rally organised by @G3G4R_official against the atrocities in Palestine.

Editor’s note: GEGAR is s a progressive youth-led movement which aims to build a united multicultural and transnational front in Malaysia against Zionism and US imperialism.

In addition to that, there are also serious allegations that this LCpl Faris is guilty of sexual harassment towards a complainant who had reported a sexual assault case.

The lady claims to being harassed and that a subsequent report on this perpetrator’s actions fell on deaf ears. She therefore hopes that by viralling this incident, LCpl Faris can be made to answer for his conduct.

The lady’s account was shared by X user 🏴 dari kampung dengan cinta dalam dada ada api (@farhanazahan) who openly asked what sort of training do police personnel undergo for them to behave in such a manner?

The post has generated 818.5K views at time of publication with many questioning the declining standards of PDRM (Royal Malaysia Police).

Many opined that problems in the police force were widespread. One demanded that stern action be taken instead of just a transfer; this should entail sacking and blacklisting for bringing shame to the uniform and image of the PDRM.

One didn’t mince his words saying that the occupation of police officer was now just simply disgusting, likening it to being a prostitute.

Some pinpointed the problem on the recruitment process, stating that this is the consequence of the police force being filled with unqualified individuals.

With regard to the allegations of sexual harassment, many were puzzled why cases of sexual abuse were NOT handled by women officers.

Quite a few queried how women can be safe when even the cops are sexual predators.

One commenter pointed out that it was difficult to fire civil servants. Most will just get transferred.

However, one netizen cheekily suggested that the police officer was only mimicking singing.

Singing or otherwise, the police force and relevant authorities need to address the issue of perceived ineptitude and misconduct.

Public confidence in the police is at an all-time low. Or do they just not care as no statement has been issued thus far on the afore-mentioned concerns? – Dec 16, 2024
