THE Consumers Association of Penang (CAP) has urged the Malaysian Ministry of Health (KKM) to ban the use of vapes and electronic cigarettes due to the sharp rise in usage among school students.
According to CAP’s Education Officer and Anti-Smoking Activist, NV Subbarow, immediate action is necessary to prevent more cases of EVALI (E-cigarette or Vaping Use-Associated Lung Injury).
He warned, “The effects of vaping have already begun. If we do not act now, the younger generation will continue to fall into a habit that can be fatal.”
Subbarow highlighted data from KKM showing that from 2019 to September 30, 2024, 41 cases of EVALI had been recorded, with treatment costs reaching RM150,000 per patient.
Additionally, Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh revealed that 20,000 school students were identified as vape users last year, though CAP believes the real number is much higher.
“During our programs, students themselves admitted they vape. Some even get their supply from their fathers or older brothers at home,” he added.
CAP expressed concern that vaping has become normalized in many Malaysian households. —Feb 9, 2025
