Filthy Kuantan budget hotel not worthy of its 3-star online rating; surprise gift of bra notwithstanding

A SHORT clip uploaded on TikTok by user @theunclebarry showcasing the state of cleanliness of a room in a budget hotel upon checking in left many netizens stunned.

Firstly, the guest highlighted that the floor was slightly dusty and had remnants of hair on it, underlining what a slip shod job the cleaning crew did (or did not do).

He then pointed out the pillowcases which were stained with plenty of “map outlines” decorating their now-grey instead of white material.

The clip was shared by influencer kamaghul deghaman (@kamaghul) on X who asked if the room was even cleaned before another guest checked in.

Proclaiming that one should NOT judge a book (or pillow) by its cover, the poster then showed the condition of the pillows underneath that did not look like it was fit for human use. He pointedly asked “what book?”

The horror show continued with the towels also looking like they have not been washed for an eternity while the bedsheets also had mystery stains.

But saving the best for last, the inspection reveals a lady’s undergarment still hanging in the washroom!

Shrieking in horror, the person taking the video could not contain his shock at the state of the budget accommodation. Noting that for RM68 per night one should not have high expectations, he nevertheless attested that he has stayed in hotels costing less that were in far better shape.

It was also revealed that many of the comments on booking site – Agoda – were from the same individual, casting doubt on the veracity of the reviews.

Based on the video evidence, the poster wondered if this hotel even deserves its three-star rating?

Obviously, the management of Sun Inns Rest House Kuantan has a lot to answer for if this is indeed true as the findings are beyond shocking.

The video has thus far generated 446.3K views with many netizens expressing shock, horror and disgust at the hotel’s level of hygiene.

Many netizens contended that such poor standards were the reason why travellers are opting for AirBnB with one simply stating it was unbearable to stay in such filth.

Another commenter claimed that for a similar charge, hotels in Thailand and Indonesia were clean and comfortable with guests having to pay between RM99 and RM300 for similar levels of hospitality in Malaysia. The three-star rating was misleading, he further suggested.

A few made the suggestion this was an hourly-rate motel used for illicit purposes with one jokingly claiming that “the red-coloured bra was an air freshener!”

The level of hygiene is indeed shocking and should not be normalised. Netizens must highlight such shoddy service in the hospitality industry to alert customers of such cess pools.

One netizen, though saw the funny side, claimed that it is difficult to please people. This demographic would complain and condemn even when presented with a surprise free gift of a bra. How often would a budget hotel do that? – March 3, 2025
