PAS said last week it would finalise its candidate for the Ayer Kuning by-election in Perak, but so far there was no news on who will be their candidate in the by-elections.
Meanwhile, BN also shifted the announcement of its candidate for the by-election from April 5 to April 7, according to Perak BN chairman Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad.
The two major political parties are bracing for at least a three-way contest in the upcoming Ayer Kuning by-election, as the Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) has confirmed its participation.
PSM has secured support from MUDA to bolster its campaign efforts. However, the party has yet to reveal the identity of its candidate for the election.
According to PAS secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan, the central leadership is awaiting a list of proposed candidates from Perak PAS, with several names already shortlisted.
Takiyuddin emphasised that the chosen candidate will be winnable and capable of representing young voters.
He noted that the by-election, set for April 26, 2025, differs from the last general election, and PAS believes it has a strong chance of winning alongside the unity government.
“We live in a democratic country, and the coming by-election should not be compared to the 15th General Election as they are different.
“Pas believes that both the party and (the unity government) have a strong chance of winning,” Takiyuddin said last week.
Meanwhile, BN stated that the announcement of the name of their candidate will be made by BN chairman and UMNO president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi during a Tapah Parliament Aidilfitri event, rescheduled due to the national MADANI Aidilfitri celebration on April 5 in Melaka and is expected post-holiday traffic.
The by-election, triggered by the death of incumbent Ishsam Shahruddin on February 22, 2025, from a heart attack, is set for April 26, with nominations on April 12 and early voting on April 22.
Saarani expressed confidence in BN’s support from the Orang Asli community, which includes 2,156 voters in the constituency, and emphasised BN’s commitment to continuity in serving the public. —Mar 23, 2025
