Fake mom flees after failed passport scam

IN Sungai Petani, a 14-year-old Sri Lankan girl and a Malaysian woman hatched a wild plan to snag a Malaysian passport.

With the help of the local woman posing as her “mom” they hoped the local immigration office would not notice the ruse. Thus the duo strutted into the UTC Immigration Office, thinking they’d pull off the ultimate identity heist.

The girl, fluent only in Tamil, mumbled through the interview while her fake mom nodded along – until an officer raised an eyebrow. He noticed that she could not speak Malay, and since the national language is necessary to obtain a passport in Malaysia, the girl was unmasked.

Panic set in, and the “mom” bolted mid-question, sprinting out like she’d left the stove on, leaving her MyKad and a birth certificate behind.

The girl, now stuck, probably wished she’d picked a better actress for the role. — March 29, 2025
