Reformasi lives on: Nurul Izzah urges PKR to stay the course

PKR Vice President Nurul Izzah described the reform agenda championed by her father since the founding of PKR, now entering its 26th year, as not yet buried.

Famously known as “Puteri Reformasi,” she acknowledged that the struggle to implement reform has attracted criticism and mockery from certain quarters, who label it as ‘reformati’ or ‘reforbasi’.

Admitting that it requires time to implement, she called for the party’s collective effort to ensure this important struggle does not fade away.

“So the issue here is the type of criticism we want to build upon. Do it for the party and for the country. Yes, we cannot claim that everything we do is right. That’s simply not true,” she said, adding that every generation has its own struggles.

“We cannot just say, ‘oh, reform is dead’. We must revive it through our actions and the decisions we make,” she reportedly said to Berita Harian.

She added that there is no shortcut to implementing a reform agenda. Hence, she urged every party, especially PKR members, to be courageous in ensuring that the goals remain aligned with the principles that were previously outlined.

“In terms of what we do, the direction is what matters. So I hope, for myself, that we are all contributors to this process,” she said.

“If we followed our hearts, everyone would want the easy way out. But at the same time, we see our brothers and sisters having to walk a horrific path, so we must summon the courage within ourselves,” she said. —Apr 23, 2025
