BN wins in the Ayer Kuning by-election

IN the Ayer Kuning by-election, unofficial results indicate that the Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Dr Mohamad Yusri Bakir won 10,971 votes, securing a 4,812-vote majority over Perikatan Nasional’s Abdul Muhaimin Malek from PAS (6,159 votes) and KS Bawani from Parti Sosialis Malaysia (1,058 votes).

UMNO secretary-general Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki declared victory at BN’s command centre, leading supporters in chants of “Allahu Akbar”. BN holds a lead of over 4,000 votes against Perikatan Nasional (PN) with only 16 polling streams remaining, making a PN comeback unlikely.

Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) has improved its performance since the 2022 general election but remains far from retaining its deposit. Malaysiakini called the election for BN at 7.45pm.

BN won most postal votes, early votes, and the Kampung Raya polling district. Results from 62 polling streams are still pending.

Voter turnout is estimated at 58%, below the Election Commission’s (EC) 70% target and the 74.85% recorded in the 2022 general election. The EC reported a 54.01% turnout by 4pm, with 31,897 registered voters.

The contest was a three-cornered fight between Yusri Bakir,  Abdul Muhaimin, and Bawani KS. — April 26, 2025
