ALTHOUGH we Malaysians take pride in our diverse culture and religion, in the same breath, we can also attest that it is a nation divided along these lines.
The government for many years has come up with programmes or education systems to cultivate national unity.
But at times, we will discover that it is the simplest of events that send the strongest message of unity. And in this case, it is death.
Recently, a video went viral showing a non-muslim Indian family being briefed on how to manage the burial of one of their members who happened to be a convert.

In the video, they could be seen taking it all in with a calmness that drew the attention of the cyberspace community.
Netizen @DragonBeau said it was a true fortune for the deceased to have these good people. Even though they were of a different religion, they listened intently.
Another netizen theorised that the family members already knew the deceased had converted to Islam. “Hopefully the family members receive the guidance to embrace Islam just like the deceased,” said @wannasran.
Also, netizen @msnoonecares7 wondered if these people were being recorded. Perhaps their privacy should be protected too, seeing that the video had gone viral with over 901 reposts.
Then there was @iamkhairuddin noting that there were many non-muslims who obey and follow the teachings of Islam.
“Life itself is about celebration, but when death comes we gather, we unite, regardless of our backgrounds. But because of a few people, everything is destroyed. My condolences,” he continued.
Adding to the heartwarming moment was the fact that the narrator in the video stated that all the cost of burial had been borne by him, from the rites and rituals to the cloth and burial itself.
It appears that the deceased will also have his or her final resting place in Putra Perdana.
On our part, we think this video will make for a good wake up call to those politicians out there seeking to gain mileage by playing the race and religion card.
There is the much unity in Malaysia. Sometimes, the light is found in the darkest of events. —May 5, 2025
