Foreign funds extend buying spree on Bursa for 3rd straight week; net inflow halved to RM425m

FOREIGN investors continued their streak of net inflows on Bursa Malaysia for the May 5-9 trading week by extending their buying spree to a third successive week with a net inflow of RM422.6 mil though lower than the previous week’s RM853.8 mil.

Foreign investors were net buyers on every trading session except Monday (May 5) and Thursday (May 8) which saw net outflows of -RM92.4 mil and -RM42.4 mil respectively, according to MIDF Research.

“The highest net inflow was recorded on Wednesday (May 7) at RM364.8 mil, followed by Friday (May 9) with RM135.1 mil,” observed the research house in its weekly fund flow report.

The three sectors that recorded the highest net foreign inflows were utilities (RM253.3 mil), telecommunications and media (RM53.3 mil) and financial services (RM51.1 mil).

The only two sectors that recorded net foreign outflows were energy (-RM57.5 mil) and technology (-RM56.0 mil).

On the contrary, local institutions extended their selling streak to three consecutive weeks with net outflows of -RM397.8 mil.

Likewise, local retail investors extended their trend of net selling to the fourth week though the outflow eased to -RM24.8m from -RM161.2 mil the week before.

The average daily trading volume (ADTV) saw a broad-based increase last week. Local institutions and local retailers saw an increase of +8.6% and +2.9% respectively while foreign investors saw an increase of +6.1%.

In comparison with another four Southeast Asian markets tracked by MIDF Research, the Philippines posted US$31.2 mil in net inflows to extend its foreign buying streak to a second week.

Thailand attracted modest inflows of US$29.1 mil – also marking its second week of foreign buying – but Indonesia became the only regional market ex-Singapore to record net outflows with foreign investors withdrawing US$197.8 mil to end a brief buying streak.

Vietnam was excluded from this week’s report as fund flow data was unavailable at the time of writing.

The top three stocks with the highest net money inflow from foreign investors last week were Tenaga Nasional Bhd (RM285.8 mil), Malayan Banking Bhd (RM88.3 mil) and IHH Healthcare Bhd (RM49.7 mil). – May 13, 2025
