No excuse for mess: KFC cleanup sparks viral debate

THERE is no excuse for bad manners. Perhaps these words best describe a recent viral video on X which showed a lady chatisting her fellow Malaysians for not cleaning up their trays after a meal in KFC.

The video panned the interior of the restaurant, showing scores of tables littered with refuse and leftovers from the previous diners.

“I had to become a cleaner when I went to KFC. Our people have the mentality of a third world country,” said the caption in the video.

“Please clean up the place. It only takes about 10 seconds,” it continued. The lady could then be seen cleaning up the tables voluntarily.

While a good number of netizens commended her for her action, the video also sparked a debate on whether it was necessary to do so in the first place.

Some netizens pointed out that the diners already paid for the service charge so there really was no reason to clean up.

“But this is the fault of our country since service charge is at 16%,” pointed out @mhmmdhsm.

“Just leave it be. This is the job of the waiter to neaten up the table,” said @fachstfu.

Another netizen said that the lady could clean it, or not, but she should not behave like she was a very holy person.

“If you feel like you are good, stay in your lane and educate properly. There is no need to say I have to do it, then show a record of me being hygienic, ocd and being good. Help wash it too. If you are that good, go over to the mamak stall and do it,” he said.

@izcolourful said nothing impactful will happen whether she cleans up or not, adding that she was likely doing this for all the views.

But perhaps the lady has a point about Malaysians holding on to their third world country mentality.

@CapaAjuan said he once brought his Singaporean friend to eat at a shop. “After eating, I told him to move. He started becoming anxious, asking if they don’t need to pick up the plates. I told him we don’t need to pick them up in a normal restaurant,” said @CapaAjuan. Apparently in Singapore people could get fined SGD100 if they don’t do so. —May 21, 2025
