Backlash as Anwar backs Azam Baki over Latheefa, Rafizi

PRIME Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim defended the extension of Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki’s contract, citing his bold and thorough anti-corruption efforts.

However, this did not go down well with netizens on X, who lashed out at Anwar, saying he should consider either lawyer Latheefa Koya or Economy Minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli as the graft buster chief.

Speaking at PKR’s 2025 National Congress, Anwar praised Azam’s unprecedented courage in targeting high-profile figures, including billionaires, despite criticism from various quarters.

“For the first time, MACC has dared to investigate ‘big tycoons’,” he said, emphasising Azam’s actions against prominent individuals.

One user said Anwar should stop the rhetoric and instead focus on how he could bring Latheefa, who is also former MACC chair, as the graft chief again. The user said Latheefa is credited with bringing former premier Datuk Seri Najib Razak in (started the cases against Najib).

Another user said Anwar could always pick Rafizi, who was just defeated by Anwar’s daughter Nurul Izzah Anwar in the PKR deputy president’s post. But the user said Rafizi is now the sacrificial lamb in the PKR.

One user raised the issue of the extension of the Chief Justice’s term in office, mentioning how Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat is also a brave lady at her post. The user also supports the idea of a return of Latheefa.

One user sarcastically asked when the MACC would investigate the current ministers and government. The user said Anwar’s statement on Azam is a blanc cheque to the graft busters to go after his regime too. — May 24, 2025
