BESIDES the soldiers, firefighters and police officers, perhaps we could say that Grab riders are the silent heroes too.
They brave the dangers of the traffic, making sure that our favourite meals are delivered to us on time.
But are they being appreciated for their service? More importantly, is it viable to make it a permanent career?
Recently a video went viral on Youtube, where a man could be seen advising Grab riders to indulge in the career only for the short term.
According to him, Grab riders do not develop any additional skill besides taking the food and delivering it.
He added that it was a shameful profession, which invites scrutiny from relatives when it was time to return to one’s hometown for Hari Raya.
Ada betulnya juga apa yang dia cakap ni, nak jadi rider Grab jangan kerja lama-lama. Cukup sekadar sebagai part-time sahaja. Sambil2 tu, boleh cari kerja tetap yang boleh bagi career growth utk diri sendiri pd masa depan.
Point last sekali tu mmg accurate. Nobody cares bout you. pic.twitter.com/rKgrS7g35P

However, netizens who watched the video held mixed opinions.
@ryuu_1612 was in agreement, stating that work as a Grab rider was suitable for those kids who had just finished studying. “It is very wasteful for people to do Grab full time,” he said.
@twitmarhaen further listed out some of the cons of working as a Grab rider. He pointed out the risk of road accidents, the lack of people, presentation, IT and problem solving skills in the profession which makes it bad for long term development.
On the other hand, netizen @amirulshafiqII said it was alright if the Grab driver is not able to buy a Vellfire.
According to him, he had seen family members working as Grab riders being more well to do compared to those teachers, engineers and other professions out there.
On our part, we would also like to point out the cold and heat that a Grab driver needs to endure in the tropical climate that is Malaysia.
Customers care only about the delivery of their meal on time, and whether the Grab driver gets in an accident on the way there, they usually do not care. That is the sad reality of being a Grab rider. —May 26, 2025
