AGE proved no barrier to love for Mohd Shaiful Nizam Yeop Mat Isa, 47, and 70-year-old Rapeah Sani, who recently became husband and wife at a group wedding ceremony in Lenggong, Perak.
Their relationship began in October last year, after Shaiful made the decision to leave Kuala Lumpur behind and settle in Lenggong.
It was there that he found himself living next door to Rapeah, and eventually growing close to her.
“At first, I just saw her as a maternal figure, like a Mak Ngah,” he said. “Now, she’s my wife. It’s just how fate works.”
The couple joined 24 other newlyweds in celebrating their union on the unique date of 25 May 2025.
For Rapeah, their marriage was an unexpected outcome of simple acts of kindness. She shared that she often cooked and shared meals with Mohd Shaiful, never imagining it would lead to anything more.
“This is my third marriage,” she explained. “I got to know him because we were neighbours, and I liked to give him food. I didn’t think he’d be interested in me. But then his mother came with a proposal.”
The couple didn’t stay engaged for long either, officially getting married on 7 April, not long after the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations. —May 26, 2025
