One-legged FoodPanda man draws attention to the plight of food delivery riders

ALTHOUGH ordering meals from Grab or FoodPanda is all about convenience, we rarely glimpse the hardship behind the delivery.

They ride motorcycles at a fast speed to catch up with the deadline, swerving in and out of the heavy traffic.

They put their lives on the line. And when the food arrives late, they are only met with a dissatisfied customer.

Perhaps their plight is best represented by a recent viral video posted on X which showed a one-legged Foodpanda staff delivering meals to one of the customers.

He was filmed from the rear by tiktoker @ombaklindu, walking ponderously on crutches. @ombaklindu said that he was feeling down until he saw this food delivery guy passing by.

“Those who don’t want to work or feel lazy can look at this Panda brother,” he added. Unsurprisingly, there is an over pouring of sympathy for the one-legged food delivery man.

Netizen @matamu_tamu further hoped that he could find a job that was more suitable for his current condition.

“Hopefully people do not get angry if their meal comes late from this rider. He tried,” said @norainaz.

She added that such individuals usually do not have a choice, having to resort to any work to put food on the table.

It is obvious from his gait that food delivery was not on his choice, since the profession required a lot of mobility.

On a separate note, accidents involving Foodpanda and Grab riders are unfortunately common due to the nature of their work and the high volume of deliveries.

These incidents often lead to injuries for the riders and can also involve other vehicles, causing damage and potential legal issues.

The Star reported a total of 1,242 accidents involving food delivery riders were recorded from 2018 until May 2022, according to the Transport Minister.

Anthony Loke added that 112 of them died, 82 had severe injuries while 1,048 sustained light injuries.

These are more than just numbers, but a reflection of the hardship behind the meals we conveniently receive over the phone. —June 18, 2025
