Motorcyclist survives crash, only to fall into the deep waters surrounding Penang Bridge

EVERYONE would love to have something soft catch their fall, whether literally or figuratively. But can the same be said to a motorcyclist who crashed his bike, only to be cushioned by a body of water?

We forgot to mention it was quite deep too, so good luck to those people who have yet to pick up swimming as a life-saving skill.

In a recent video, a motorcyclist could be seen floating under the Penang bridge, having recently fallen off the edge.

More prominent was the fact that a boat was fortunately nearby, so he was quickly fished out of the water.

The brief video did not provide further details regarding the accident but a post on Facebook by Penang Today Community showed the aftermath.

On another note, this is not the first time an accident results in the victim being thrown off the Penang bridge. Among them, a 2019 accident involving a Toyota Vios and a Mazda CX-5 takes the cake.

To recap, the CX-5 plunged into sea after being rammed into by the Vios. Rescuers successfully winched out the badly damaged SUV from the sea after a three-day search and rescue operation and several failed attempts.

The driver of the vehicle, Moey Yun Peng, 20, was still strapped to the driver’s seat. Moey’s cause of death has been classified as “drowning in an individual involved in a road traffic collision”.

But how deep is the water surrounding the Penang bridge? It varies according to areas but the main ship channel into the Pinang Harbour which is via the North Channel, has a depth averaging at 10.2 metres.

It isn’t much considering how deep the sea in some parts of the world can go, but it is a long way down for a lone motorcyclist. —July 6, 2025
