NOT all monitor lizards want to be wild. Some just want to go to school to learn ABC. Perhaps this was what a monitor lizard felt as it looked through the gate that barred it’s entry into a primary school.
The many small humans in the school compound should serve as a delectable treat too.
In a video post on X by netizen @update11111, a huge monitor lizard is seen peeping through the entrance of Sekolah Kebangsaan Jalan Batu. Either that or occasionally hissing and threatening the passerby.

From the size of it, the reptile could easily hurt any of the kids there if it had gotten through. The brief video did not reveal if it did, or if the authorities managed to wrangle it and send it back to reptile jail.
Netizen @abgkidal who watched the video said it was inappropriate for people to record the video yet did not report the incident to the fire department.
Another neitzen cracked a joke, saying that the monitor lizard was late to school, hence the gate had been closed.
Also, @eamir_emre pointed out that the reptile served an important role in the ecosystem by eating the snake eggs and rats that lived in the drain.
On another note, monitor lizards have been known to threaten human lives so its appearance at the school gate should not be taken lightly.
Back in 2018, a housewife bravely confronted a large monitor lizard in a desperate bid to save her 8-month-old daughter from being attacked and dragged away at a resort in Pulau Tioman.
Nor Raudhah Maisarah Abdullah initially struck the reptile with a stick, but when that failed to stop it, she used her bare hands to forcefully push the creature away as it tried to pull her baby into nearby bushes.
The diet of a monitor lizard includes a wide variety of animals, from insects and crustaceans to birds, mammals, and even other reptiles. Some monitor lizards also consume eggs and scavenge on carrion.
Although these huge lizards are known to attack humans, infants are the ones that are most threatened by them. A primary school student should be big enough to dislodge even a determined monitor lizard.—July 9, 2025
