FEDERAL police’s criminal investigation department (CID) has taken over the case involving the attack on Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli’s 12-year-old son, who was assaulted at a shopping mall in Putrajaya on Aug 13.
Selangor police chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar said the move was made to allow a more holistic and centralised probe into the incident. He urged anyone with information to come forward and assist in the investigation.
Shazeli said police had found several leads from CCTV footage that could help identify the attackers. Officers are also working with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to trace threatening text messages sent to Rafizi’s wife the day after the assault. But the study of the CCTV footage had only been “partially helpful”.
“The motive behind this case is still unknown. We are conducting a thorough investigation, including the statements that have been recorded so far,” he said. “So far, statements from six individuals, including Rafizi’s son, have been recorded.”
The attack occurred around 2 pm when two men on a motorcycle, dressed in black and wearing helmets, followed Rafizi’s wife’s car. They dragged the boy from the vehicle and jabbed his left arm with a syringe before fleeing the scene.
Rafizi said his son will undergo six months of medical tests to rule out the risk of being injected with harmful substances. Blood samples have been taken, and results are pending.
Shazeli confirmed that extra security has been provided for Rafizi and his family. His son is reported to be in stable condition. —Aug 17, 2025
