RTD intensifies action against illegible number plates, collects RM93.51 mil in summonses

ENFORCEMENT against illegible, fake and extreme vehicle number plates was intensified by the Road Transport Department (RTD) as the use of so-called “peanut-sized” registration numbers continued to gain popularity among motorcyclists.

RTD senior enforcement director Datuk Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan said at a press conference in Jalan Ampang that offences involving fancy and extreme registration numbers were now being dealt with more strictly under Section 108 of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Such number plates were said to have the potential to confuse enforcement authorities and obstruct vehicle identification.

According to him, cases detected would be brought to court, with fines ranging from a minimum of RM5,000 to a maximum of RM10,000.

During the RTD enforcement operation along Jalan Ampang several motorcycles fitted with extreme fancy number plates were seized.

It was revealed that some motorcyclists had admitted to using the tiny number plates for amusement and were unaware of the heavy penalties involved.

Meanwhile, RTD was reported to have collected RM93.51 mil in summons payments as of yesterday under a 50 per cent discount programme that began in November.

A total of 702,606 summonses were settled, with 404,535 linked to the Automated Awareness Safety System aimed at curbing speeding.

Despite the collection, it was noted that RM1.42 bil in outstanding summonses remained unpaid. Motorists were urged to settle their dues before the discount programme ends. —Dec 28, 2025
