Cabinet agrees to a 10-year term limit for prime ministers

THE Government has agreed to impose a 10-year limit on the prime minister’s tenure to strengthen accountability, checks and balances, and constitutional governance.

Law Minister Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said the decision was approved by the Cabinet following public and stakeholder consultations.

“This decision was made after the Cabinet conducted a comprehensive review of policy inputs, public views and recommendations submitted through holistic engagement sessions involving various stakeholders.

“The proposal to limit the tenure is intended to prevent excessive concentration of power, strengthen the democratic system and enhance public trust in national leadership institutions, in line with mature democratic practices at the international level,” she said in a statement today.

The move aims to prevent excessive concentration of power and align Malaysia with mature democracies and will require amendments to the Federal Constitution to be tabled in Parliament. — Jan 31, 2026
