Abdul Halim appointed as new MACC chief effective May 13

THE Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar has consented to the appointment of former High Court judge Datuk Seri Abdul Halim Aman as the new chief commissioner of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), effective May 13, 2026.

Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar said the appointment was made in accordance with subsection 5(1) of the MACC Act 2009 [Act 694].

“The government is confident that with his extensive experience and high integrity, he will be able to strengthen governance empowerment efforts. This includes boosting public confidence and intensifying the anti-corruption agenda for the benefit of the nation,” he said in a statement today.

Yesterday (April 24), Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim presented the proposal for the new MACC chief commissioner to His Majesty.

Two days ago (Apr 23), Sultan Ibrahim said that he will select the country’s new anti-graft chief, in a move that indicates that current chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki is set to be replaced.

In a post on his Facebook page, Sultan Iskandar said that there was no need for the issue of who will lead the MACC to be politicised by any party.

“I will determine the best candidate to lead the MACC after this,” Sultan Ibrahim was quoted as saying by the Royal Press Office.

Azam – whose contract is set to end in May – has been facing ongoing calls to resign from his position amid misconduct allegations.

Previously, Azam assumed the role of chief commissioner on March 9, 2020, replacing Latheefa Koya who resigned on March 2, 2020, after serving for about 10 months.

Azam was reappointed three consecutive times, each term lasting one year. — April 25, 2026
