“Tangkap Azam Baki” rally still on

A rally dubbed “Tangkap Azam Baki” will proceed in Kuala Lumpur despite the government naming a new Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief.

Organiser Kelvin Lee confirmed the event will go ahead, maintaining three key demands to be addressed publicly during the gathering.

“The rally will proceed as planned, and our three demands still stand. We will officially respond during the rally,” news portal Malay Mail quoted Lee, who is also reform group Bersih’s deputy chairman, as saying.

This rally starts this afternoon at 3pm. “Tangkap Azam Baki” rally participants are expected to gather and march from the shopping mall Sogo to Dataran Merdeka.

Meanwhile, Bersih chairman Muhammad Faisal Abdul Aziz said the group welcomes the appointment of Datuk Seri Abdul Halim Aman to replace Tan Sri Azam Baki but noted the protest is not about the change in leadership.

“We welcome the recent announcement that Azam’s contract will no longer be extended,” he said.

“However, this will not stop us from gathering as what we are demanding is reform of the MACC leadership structure as well as a Royal Commission of Inquiry on the alleged wrongdoings of Azam and MACC’s abuse of power.”

Earlier, Chief Secretary Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar announced Abdul Halim will assume the MACC leadership from May 13. Azam, who has led the agency since 2020, served beyond retirement age through multiple contract extensions and has recently faced controversies. — April 25, 2026
