IN A Facebook post after nomination day, Former Skudai assemblyman Marina Ibrahim said she received four nomination forms from different individuals over the past week.
According to her, some even offered to fully finance her campaign if she agreed to contest.
“‘Marina. We’ll bear all the costs. How much do you need for your campaign? Don’t worry about it,'” she quoted some of them.
Marina said she turned down the offers, adding that a long-time supporter had reminded her not to accept money from others if she ever decided to contest.
She also dismissed speculation that she would contest as an independent, join another political party or had been paid, saying she was relieved that nomination day had passed.
Marina said she would continue serving the community despite not contesting, including helping residents through mobile service counters and conducting art therapy sessions for cancer patients.
To recap, controversy erupted around Marina following her announcement not to defend her Skudai seat, retire from active politics, and eventually leave DAP.
Marina’s service centre head, Ong Huai Yi, publicly criticised Johor DAP’s leadership claiming that Marina had twice been asked to withdraw from contests for state party positions to make way for other leaders.
The party only decided to field her in Tiram at the last minute instead of preparing the constituency over several years.
DAP had failed to consistently build grassroots support in the Malay-majority area despite repeatedly saying it wanted to expand there.—June 28, 2026
