Selangor unveils BLAST initiative to boost SME global competitiveness

THE Selangor government has launched the Invest Selangor Business Linkages & Advancement Programme (BLAST), a new initiative aimed at helping local small and medium enterprises (SMEs) strengthen their capabilities and integrate into global supply chains.

The programme, introduced through Invest Selangor Berhad, was launched by Selangor executive councillor for investment, trade and mobility Ng Sze Han.

BLAST seeks to connect local SMEs with multinational corporations (MNCs), mid-tier companies (MTCs) and industry anchor companies, enabling them to participate in higher-value supply chains while improving their competitiveness and long-term sustainability.

The initiative forms part of the Second Selangor Plan (RS-2) under the Local Market Integration Programme and builds on the state’s industrial development efforts under the First Selangor Plan (RS-1).

Selangor remains Malaysia’s leading investment destination, recording RM33.5 bil in approved investments during the first quarter of 2026. In 2025, the state contributed RM460.1 bil, or 26.5%, of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP), the highest among all states.

The six-month programme will provide participating SMEs with capability development, corporate mentoring and market readiness training before culminating in business matching sessions at the Selangor International Business Summit (SIBS) 2026, to be held from Oct 14 to 17 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.

Unlike conventional business matching programmes, BLAST aims to establish long-term partnerships between SMEs and industry leaders, helping participating companies upgrade their operations, meet international standards and expand into regional and global markets.

The inaugural intake comprises 12 SMEs across four priority sectors identified as key growth drivers for Selangor: aerospace, rail, life sciences and digital technology.

Ng said the state’s priority was not only attracting investments but ensuring they generated lasting opportunities for local businesses.

“While we take pride in Selangor’s continued success in attracting investments, our greater responsibility is to ensure these investments create meaningful and lasting opportunities for Selangor businesses, particularly our SMEs.

“BLAST is not simply about matching SMEs with strategic corporate partners. It is about preparing them for success by strengthening their capabilities and connecting them to high-value supply chains,” he said.

The programme is being implemented in collaboration with the Malaysian Technology Development Corporation (MTDC), which will oversee SME capability development alongside corporate and ecosystem partners.

MTDC group CEO Ts. Mohammad Hazani Hassan said BLAST would create structured pathways for SMEs to engage with anchor companies, strengthen industry readiness and compete for opportunities in strategic supply chains.

Invest Selangor aims for participating SMEs to achieve at least 5% revenue growth by 2030 while strengthening the resilience and sustainability of the state’s industrial ecosystem. ‒ July 14, 2026
