PETROLIAM Nasional Bhd (PETRONAS) says any decision on whether Malaysia will host a Formula One (F1) race again rests with the Youth and Sports Ministry and relevant authorities.
In a statement to Bernama today, the national oil company said it was aware of the possibility of the championship returning to the country this year
But it stressed it will continue pursuing opportunities aligned with its strategic and commercial priorities while delivering long-term value for the nation.
Youth and Sports Minister Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari recently confirmed the government is assessing the possibility of staging a replacement race at the Sepang International Circuit if the Bahrain Grand Prix cannot proceed.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has also been briefed on the proposal. Malaysia last hosted an F1 race in 2017, although Sepang continues to host MotoGP events and retains the FIA Grade 1 licence required for Formula One.
PETRONAS, the naming rights sponsor of Sepang and long-time Mercedes F1 partner, previously denied reports it planned an F1 return in 2026. — July 25, 2026
