THERE have been calls for the government to investigate the allegations of PAS president Tan Sri Hadi Awang that there was covert US involvement in the attempt to charge the government in Malaysia.
Hadi claimed in the recent PAS assembly that two PAS leaders were invited to the US Embassy to discuss the charge of government in Malaysia.
People have since prompted to government to investigate, saying that the US had no business interfering in the domestic politics of the country.
If there was an attempt, although I am not inclined to believe Hadi indulged himself in cheap publicity, then he should reveal details of the meeting with US Embassy officials.
The US Embassy Interim Charge D’Affaires David H. Gamble, Jr has denied the claims of Hadi in alleging that the US had an interest in wanting a regime change in Malaysia.
Anyway, the fact of the US involvement in regime change is not something new. In the past, both overt and covert attempts to change governments were something well-established.
The Central Intelligence Agency’s (CIA) ouster of former Chile president Salvador Allende was a classic example of an overt political interference.
Ideologically and politically, it doesn’t make sense for the US Embassy inviting PAS leaders to discuss the subject of regime change.
If at all the US was interested in influencing Malaysians politics, it would make sense for them to prevent PAS from aspiring for national political power rather than supporting it.
Shame on Hadi
I have strange feelings that Hadi could have exaggerated an ordinary meeting with US Embassy officials as something sinister and covert.
Hadi by saying this wanted to give the impression that PAS is on the right side of the US.
If at all the US wants to influence Malaysian politics, it would be definitely not do so with the support of PAS.
PAS with its obscurantist political views would not have been favourable to the US.
It is terrible shame on the part of Hadi in trying to give the impression that the US Embassy was close to PAS.
Hadi is desperate for national political power even at the expense of forming a political alliance with UMNO, its former nemesis.–Sept 6, 2026
