Foreign fund net outflow on Bursa heightens to RM640m despite a shorter trading week

FOREIGN investors extended their net selling streak to a fifth week in a row on Bursa Malaysia with -RM640.3 mil in outflow during the Sept 1-4 trading week or 43% more than the prior week’s -RM366.0 mil.

This came during a shortened trading week with the local bourse having closed on Monday (Aug 31) in conjunction with Malaysia’s National Day, according to MBSB Research (formerly MIDF Research).

“Foreign institutions were net sellers on all four trading days during the week,” observed the research house in its weekly fund flow report.

“The highest outflows were recorded on Tuesday (Sept 1) (-RM488.4 mil), followed by Thursday (Sept 3) (-RM74.6 mil), Wednesday (Sept 2) (-RM56.8 mil) and Friday (Sept 4) (-RM20.5 mil).”

The top three sectors that recorded net inflows from foreign institutions were plantation (RM138.2 mil), transportation & logistics (RM81.4 mil) and energy (RM40.3 mil).

The three largest sectors with net outflows were financial services (-RM462.9 mil), technology (-RM118.8 mil) and utilities (-RM106.8 mil).

On the contrary, local institutions extended their net buying streak to six consecutive weeks with inflow valued at RM120.3 mil.

Likewise, retailers, too, extended their net buying streak to two consecutive weeks with inflow of RM520.0 mil.

The average daily trading volume (ADTV) saw a broad-based decrease; retailers were down by -10.8%, local institutions (-9.4%) and foreign institutions (-30.5%).

In comparison with another four Southeast Asian markets tracked by MBSB Research, foreign investors net bought in Indonesia for the third straight week with inflow amounting to US$130.5 mil.

This came about despite the country’s manufacturing PMI slipped to 49.8 in August 2026 (July 2026: 50.2) amid a mild deterioration in manufacturing conditions.

Thailand recorded US$95.2 mil in net foreign inflow after two consecutive weeks of net selling in line with improvement in its Business Sentiment Index to 49.8 in August 2026 from 46.7 in July 2026, the highest level since December 2025 (despite remaining below the 50 threshold for nine successive months).

However, foreign investors net sold -US$54.9 mil in Vietnam after the prior week’s inflow while the Philippines extended its net selling streak to five consecutive weeks with -US$21.7 mil in net foreign outflows.

The top three stocks with the highest net money inflow from foreign investors last week were SD Guthrie Bhd (RM171.2 mil Bursa Malaysia Bhd (RM104.4 mil) and Westports Holdings Bhd (RM77.7 mil). – Sept 7, 2026
