FORMER prime minister Najib Razak has been granted a conditional pardon allowing him to serve the remainder of his current prison sentence under house arrest until Aug 23, 2028.
The legal affairs division of the Prime Minister’s Department said in a statement today that the decision was made at the 64th meeting of the Federal Territories Pardons Board today.
It said Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim had granted Najib the conditional pardon, subject to him paying a RM50 mil fine.
Netizens has since turned up by the numbers to vent their frustration on the cyberspace, take for example, the comment section of a post on Malaysiakini that carried the news.
“Very good discount, just pay 50mil,” said Nitipong Min while a sarcastic Colin Chin wondered if it could be paid by installment.
A bitter Steve Sam even said, “Crime pays for some. No need to repent, no need to admit guilt nor accept the court verdicts and house arrest legislation hasn’t even been passed.”
Then there was a sceptical Ruth RC who wondered if he was ever in Kajang prison in the first place.
One can only wonder why Hgm Priya said thank you to DAP for the gift, whatever she meant by that.

Note that Najib, 73, has been serving a reduced six-year prison sentence at Kajang prison after the FTPB halved his original 12-year sentence in February 2024. The initial RM210 mil fine was also reduced to RM50 mil.
He was imprisoned in August 2022 after the Federal Court dismissed his final appeal in the SRC International Sdn Bhd case.
In December 2025, Najib was convicted of abuse of power and money laundering involving more than RM2 bil linked to 1MDB.
He was sentenced to 15 years’ jail and fined RM11.38 bil. He is appealing the conviction.—Sept 18, 2026
