FORMER DAP member Dr Ong Kian Ming believes Pakatan Harapan (PH) faces a realistic threat of losing control of Selangor in the 16th General Election (GE16).
Speaking in an interview with Sinar Harian, he did not elaborate on PH’s downfall in Selangor but said it is his biggest prediction so far.
Before making his predictions on Selangor, he spoke of the possible rise of UMNO leader Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi as the next prime minister (PM) after GE16, adding that PH will barely win 40 to 50 seats.
“At the same time, Zahid will become the 11th PM. There is also a high possibility that PH will not only return to being the opposition bloc – barely able to defend 40 to 50 Parliamentary seats – but even the Selangor state government held by PH since 2008 might fall.
“That is my early projection. My biggest prediction so far,” he said.
Overall, he projects a major political shift driven by a strengthening “blue wave” coalition of Barisan Nasional (BN) and Perikatan Nasional (PN).
According to Ong, a successful Malay-Muslim unity narrative could sweep over 112 parliamentary seats in Peninsular Malaysia.
He said this alliance will dismantle PH’s dominance and end its reign over Selangor, which the coalition has held since 2008.
Regarding DAP, Ong argues that the party has compromised its core principles of transparency, accountability, and progressivism since joining the unity government.
He points out that DAP now tolerates practices it once fought against, such as withholding direct constituency allocations from opposition MPs and failing to address integrity issues openly.
Furthermore, he criticised the party leadership for becoming arrogant and out of touch, noting that public displays of disrespect by certain senior figures have alienated Malay voters.
Ong views these actions as a departure from DAP’s founding ideals, ultimately prompting his departure from the party to regain his independence. — Sept 26, 2026
