MCA’s recent walkout from the Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate announcement ceremony has become seemingly worthwhile.
This is given the party struck the proverbial ‘consolation prize’ by having successfully increased the number of constituencies it would be contesting in the Melaka state election from two to three.
Party president Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong confirmed that MCA is fielding Jasmine Lok Huey Yee for the Bandar Hilir state seat – a DAP stronghold.
Lok’s candidacy was confirmed with the presentation of her nomination letter by Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
The 38-year-old Melaka City councillor holds a public relations degree from Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR). She is also the information chief for MCA’s state chapter.
During the candidate naming ceremony, BN only named two candidates from MCA. The duo are incumbents Datuk Lim Ban Hong and Datuk Ngwe Hee Sem who will defend the Klebang and Machap Jaya seats respectively.
MCA previously contested seven seats in Melaka. This prompted Wee to stage a walkout along with the MCA delegation last weekend.
A subsequent meeting took place UMNO and MCA. Zahid viewed it positively but Wee remarked it as being far from positive.
MCA’s presidential council also met to discuss the party’s next course of action.
With MCA taking up three seats, Perikatan Nasional (PN) would be contesting six seats instead of the seven that was initially allocated.
BN and PN are entering the Melaka state polls as allies even though BN is part of the ruling Madani government while PN makes up federal opposition bloc.
Nomination for the Melaka polls is scheduled for tomorrow (Oct 31). Polling day is set on Nov 14. – Oct 30, 2026
