THE Penang state government has been urged to form a state commission of inquiry (SCI) that will thoroughly probe into the slope slide tragedy in Taman Seri Rambai, Paya Terubong Georgetown, Penang.
The tragedy that led to the death of Dr Wong Kar Lin took place on Oct 25.
The call for a SCI was made by Air Puteh state assemblyman Lim Guan Eng while debating Penang budget. The DAP advisor pointed out that a SCI would be able to investigate and mete out due punishment to those who are responsible in a professional, fair and free manner.
He also reiterated that land developer Sunrich Conquest Sdn Bhd and land owner Geo Valley did not obtain an approval for development during his time as Penang chief minister (2008-2018).
The Bagan MP also confirmed that there are certain parties who are linking his name to the ill-fated project that led to the tragedy. He has consulted lawyers for the next course of action.
The proposal for a SCI is one of the five measures recommended for Penang state government to ensure policies are beneficial to the people.
Earlier, he supported the state government budget which is RM1,074 bil. The Gross Domestic Product rate was 7.3%.
Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow was put in a spot as Lim asked why policies beneficial for the people was not prioritised when the state consolidated fund stood at RM522.87 mil.
Quit rent hike by multiple times continue to haunt land owners and this can be seen in the sudden hike by RM49 mil to RM165 mil as of September 2026.
Lim made a plea to the state government to halt all increased tax payment since the state government did not need additional funds. This was in line to ensure people lived a better life.
He called for the Penang Perak water project for bulk water supply from 2032 to 2072 to be made public as the project is valued at RM24.6 bil. If there is a non-disclosure agreement, Penang government was instructed to obtain the approval from Prasarana Air dan Irigasi Perak Sdn Bhd (PAIP).
The veteran DAP leader also raised concerns over the Penang Development Corporation’s failure to manage a road and bridge upgrade which was highlighted in the Auditor-General’s Report. Penang government was told to act against the responsible officers.
Another PDC project that was highlighted by the Auditor-General’s report also was highlighted by Lim.
It was supposed to be a land development project on a 1,142-acre land in Batu Kawan 2 Industrial Park but the Auditor-General’s Report clarified that the net land size was only 872 acres. – Nov 2, 2026.
