Posh and agile but definitely not for the faint-hearted – such is the distinctive feeling of owning the Lexus UX 200, which has been deemed as one of the highly anticipated cars to hit Malaysian roads this year.
Boasting coupe-like elegance, the UX (which stands for “Urban Explorer”) has the proportions of a hatchback that rides lower to the ground for better handling.
Aesthetically, the dynamic new model is a product of creative engineering led by Lexus’ first female chief engineer and current executive vice president, Chika Kako (left), who marries state-of-the art technology, Japanese craftsmanship and wholesome elegance with the luxury of a Lexus to produce a car with truly agile performance.
Styled in the spirit of Engawa (Japanese traditional architecture that seamlessly connects inside with the outside), the UX 200 embodies a distinctly Japanese sophistication with the design principle of Takumi that prizes attention to detail.
Moreover, the UX is the first Lexus model to offer a new trim grain finish that is inspired by the grain of Japanese paper – a familiar sight in traditional Japanese home known as Washi. This meticulous Japanese Washi Texture craftsmanship is reflected in the Lexus UX’s doors and dashboard.
Elsewhere, the Lexus UX’s leather seats also bear the 1,200-year-old Sashiko stitching technique as employed on martial arts uniforms to provide protective quilting that ensures durability by making the car seats less vulnerable to wear and tear (in addition to providing ventilation for ultimate comfort and functionality).
Technological feat
Developed on the brand’s latest Global Architecture-C Platform, the UX is engineered to have a more stable and dynamic chassis with distinctive driving character.
Nestled under the hood of the UX 200 is a highly efficient 2.0-litre naturally aspirated engine producing 169 horsepower in-line with 4-cylinder 16-valve petrol engine that is paired with a 10-speed Direct-Shift CVT gearbox capable of going from zero to 100km/h in 9.2 seconds before reaching a top speed of 190km/h.
Just like the previous Lexus models, safety is always a top priority for the UX 200. The car is fitted with the Lexus Safety System+, an integrated safety suite that operates in tandem to offer elevated driving pleasure while maintaining a high level of safety.
This system employs sophisticated sensors and cameras on board to not only reduce or avoid accidents, but also enhance driving pleasure by removing the daily stresses of commuting through some of its functions.
This integrated suite of advanced safety features comes in the form of pre-collision systems, radar cruise control, lane tracing assistance and adaptive high-beam technology, as well as blind spot monitoring, rear traffic alerts, and active cornering assistance.
Above all else, the UX 200 is designed to be maneuvered easily and confidently with the Lexus Drive Mode Select that allows the driver to tailor the desired driving experience, comforted by the car’s eight Supplemental Restraint System airbags.
Lexus’ UX 200 is priced at RM235,472 for the Urban, RM274,027 for the Luxury and RM289,363.50 for the F Sport (on-the-road, without insurance). Ownership comes with a five-year warranty with unlimited mileage and is available at seven Lexus locations throughout Malaysia.
