Grocers MCO-proofing its businesses by turning to e-commerce

WITH the on-and-off closures of fresh markets around the nation from the movement control orders (MCOs), grocers turned to e-commerce in order to keep their businesses going and continuing to provide customers with fresh produce despite being stuck at home.

Lazada Malaysia enabled this trend by providing the platform for grocers to keep on distributing their fresh product and frozen goods to customers within the same day or the order or even opt for a 48-hours delivery.

In the case of a local fresh produce provider Cameron Farmers, they ended up having to throw away tonnes of unsold vegetables each day due to the disruption in supply chains since the MCO started.

Ever since joining Lazada, Cameron Farmers are now selling an average of 10,000kg or fresh produce on a monthly basis.

“(With Lazada), we were able to MCO-proof our business online and retain the livelihoods of our farmers,” said Cameron Farmers marketing manager Shwe Ying.

Freshly-caught seafood can also be marketed on the platform, as Fully Fishery has proven, selling up to 3,000kg of its seafood every month.

Its co-owner Lee Ka Seng said: “We have been selling on Lazada Malaysia since the end of last year because of the increasing demand for groceries on the platform and the much-needed logistics support it provides to sellers.”

“Prior to that, we have been selling our seafood through livestreams on social media, but the pandemic showed that businesses need to adapt and be future-proof,” he added. – Jan 29, 2021
