Cluster fear rises as COVID-19 infections detected in Tokyo Olympic Village

Tokyo Olympics organisers reported that COVID-19 infections have been detected inside the athletes’ village after 25 people tested positive for the virus over the weekend. On July 17, 2021, there were 15 people connected with the Games who tested positive, including the first case found in the Olympic Village.

On July 18, another 10 people, including two South African footballers as well as a video analyst tested positive. The South Africans were the first people to test positive within the village.

The number of Games-related cases had risen to more than 50 as of July 19, according to a Reuters tally. Organisers have promised to hold a safe and secure event despite widespread calls to cancel the Games and concern about a fifth wave of infections in the Japanese capital.
