KEPONG MP Lim Lip Eng has proposed that the Federal Territories Ministry set up a youth council under the purview of the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) and appoint qualified individuals to handle youth-related problems around the city.
According to him, similar councils have already been established in many developed countries and the youths who are involved in the council also have direct involvement in locality and community planning.
“Brilliant ideas are being pitched on social media each day by youths under the age of 30, and these ideas are not simply tweets or posts but blueprints related to social, economic and environmental issues in the city,” Lim remarked in a statement issued today.
Such a council, he said, will allow youths to participate and have their voices heard especially on related issues in within the city.
“Statistics provided by the Department of Statistics Malaysia indicate that half the population in the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur consists of youth, and the establishment of a youth council will be reflective of the demographics,” he added.
Lim also pointed out that there are many KL-based youth activists who should be made part of the proposed council.
“These activists are skilled and well-versed about the situation and problems faced by the various communities within the city.
“Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) led by the youth such as Yayasan Chow Kit and Buku Jalanan Chow Kit have long served and supported the communities in need all around Kuala Lumpur, and their views will help steer Kuala Lumpur towards becoming a developed city,” he concluded. – Sept 10, 2021.
