Could last week be the beginning of foreign funds’ exit from Bursa?

FOREIGN investors on Bursa Malaysia broke their seven-week streak as net buyers on Bursa Malaysia with a net outflow of RM163.64 mil for the week ended Nov 26.

As the market reopened last Monday (Nov 22), local institutions and retailers were net buyers amounting to RM37.33 mil and RM45.11 mil respectively while foreign investors were net sellers to the tune of -RM82.44 mil.

“Foreign investors were net sellers for every session during the week,” observed MIDF Research in its weekly fund flow report. “The largest foreign outflow was recorded on Monday (Nov 22) at -RM82.44 mil.”

Meanwhile, retailers were net buyers except on Friday (Nov 26). Their largest net buying was recorded on Monday (Nov 22) amounting to RM45.11 mil while their only net selling was to the tune of -RM7.72 mil.

For the week, retailers bought equities with a net worth of RM109.50 mil on Bursa Malaysia.

On the other hand, local institutions recorded a cumulative weekly net selling to the tune of -RM54.16 mil. They were net sellers for majority of the week except on Monday (Nov 22) and Friday (Nov 26).

Their largest net selling took place on Thursday (Nov 25) to the tune of -RM16.30 mil while their largest net inflow on Friday (Nov 26) amounted to RM50.49 mil.

Since the beginning of 2021, retailers have cumulatively been the only net buyers on Bursa Malaysia to the tune of RM11.70 bil while local institutions and foreign investors were net sellers amounting to -RM9.85 bil and -RM1.85 bil respectively.

In terms of participation, retail investors, local institutions and the foreign investors recorded a weekly movement of -14.03%, -9.83% and -11.32% respectively in average daily trade value (ADTV).

In comparison with another three Southeast Asian markets tracked by MIDF Research last week, only Indonesia recorded a net inflow of foreign funds at US$23.59 mil with Thailand posting the biggest outflow at -US$89.01 mil followed by Malaysia (-US$38.90 mil) and the Philippines (-US$14.62 mil).

The top three stocks with the highest net money inflow last week were CIMB Group Holdings Bhd (RM4.61 mil), Yinson Holdings Bhd (RM2.5 mil) and Bursa Malaysia Bhd (RM1.63 mil). – Nov 29, 2021
