IN a blow against Home Ministry, the High Court ordered the former to register the Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (MUDA) within 14 days.
The court also awarded costs of RM10,000 to the political outfit.
Recently, MUDA filed a legal suit against Home Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin for refusing to allow MUDA to register officially with the Registrar of Societies (ROS).
However, the minister had approved the registration of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad led Parti Pejuang Tanah Air, despite rejecting it in Feb.
MUDA’s pro-tem-committee then filed an appeal with the Home Ministry but was rejected without giving any reasons.
Speaking to reporters outside the court, its pro-tem vice president Lim Wie Jet said the High Court found Home Ministry’s excuse of MUDA being “prejudicial to national security” as baseless.
“We extend our appreciation to the court and hope the ministry will not file an appeal against the decision. Register us for the sake of democracy,” he added.
On related matter, pro-tem party president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman said that today’s victory was only for MUDA but democracy as a whole.
“We went through a lot in the last two years, including having to deal with threats and prosecutions. Today’s court decision has made everything worth it,” the Muar MP stated. – Dec 14, 2021.
