Unionist to Gov’t: Cast aside bureaucracy, deliver the RM1k now to flood victims

THE Government must deliver the RM1,000 aid money to flood victims the soonest to alleviate their burden, a veteran unionist said.

“Put aside all the need to fill up forms and other bureaucratic hurdles. They are already suffering and we must help them fast.

“One way is by getting our state assemblypersons and MPs to deliver the monies to those affected. We can worry about filling up the forms later,” Union Network International-Malaysia Labour Centre (UNI-MLC) president Datuk Mohamed Shafie BP Mammal told FocusM.

In the floods that inundated parts of the Peninsula Malaysia last week, hundreds of thousands of people had their homes and properties destroyed.

To date, the police confirmed that over 40 people have lost their lives and they are still looking for others who have been reported missing.

Since then, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob had announced RM1,000 for families affected by the floods.

Touching on the matter, Shafie said that it was best if the Government could hand over the sum to the people within 48 hours as they are in dire need of any help they can get.

“And the victims are too busy getting their lives back together by recuperating from the losses they suffered, including the emotional trauma.

“Some of the people have had their homes completely destroyed and lost loved ones. It was a national disaster and we need to help them quickly,” he stressed.

Volunteers going all out for victims

On related matters, Shafie lauded the tireless effort by volunteers who are working almost daily to help flood victims get back on their feet.

“I went to Hulu Langat recently to help several flood victims and I was astounded by the tenacity and perseverance of the volunteers there.

“By mobilising limited resources amongst themselves, they are working tirelessly to help the flood victims 24 hours a day. I salute these people and grateful for their kind deed,” he remarked. – Dec 26, 2021.
