Zahid: “UMNO not desperate to work with ‘desperate’ Muhyiddin”

BERSATU president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s meeting with Pejuang chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has exposed the former’s true intentions and his desperation to return to power, said UMNO president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

“To anyone in UMNO who still wants to cooperate, believe and defend Bersatu, they must evaluate the political moves and habits of the Perikatan Nasional (PN) and Bersatu chairman who is so desperate to become the prime minister again,” he said in a Facebook post.

“Do we still want to cooperate with such parties?”

Zahid’s criticism of Muhyiddin came after news that the latter had paid visit to several political leaders, including former premier Mahathir who had called Muhyiddin a “backstabber” and decided not to work with him.

Mahathir also said last Friday (April 1) that Muhyiddin’s performance as prime minister was unimpressive and undeserving of support, adding that many people were not happy with Muhyiddin’s leadership.

Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim also revealed on April 2 that there have been ongoing discussions between him and Muhyiddin, although they have never discussed supporting the latter to become prime minister again.

Similarly, Warisan chief Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal also said that Muhyiddin had contacted him.

It was believed that the meeting was to discuss forming a new partnership before the next general election although Shafie had rejected Muhyiddin’s request after the latter’s role in the Sheraton Move which saw the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan administration in 2020.

According to Zahid, while UMNO was not perfect, it was not desperate to do anything within its means to be in power.

“We are not desperate to the point where we would sell our principles and do anything to atone for our shame and seize power,” he added. – April 4, 2022
