A neutral stance by unions on the future of TNB’s head honcho

THE Joint-Committee of Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) Workers Unions which represents various levels of workers in TNB today signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to highlight a united stand with regard to their president and CEO Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan.

The MoU was jointly signed by the presidents of various divisions, namely Mohd Roszeli Majid (Union of Support Services Officers), Harriezan Ahmad (Executive Association), Mohd Jaaffril Mat Isa (Security Unit Association) and Jamal Mohamad Abdul Aziz (Association of Executive Officers).

In a statement, the joint committee said it is not bound to the official stand of Kesatuan Percantuman Pekerja-Pekerja Tenaga Nasional Bhd (KPPPTNB) which called for Amir Hamzah to remain in his position amid rumours of his removal from the hot seat. KPPPTNB claimed that it has a strong backing of 13,000 TNB union members.

Contrary to KPPPTNB, the joint-committee took a neutral and non-partisan stand in any turmoil involving political-motivated issues.

The statement further noted that the turmoil involving the current position of the president and CEO of TNB is beyond the jurisdiction of TNB Unions.

Therefore, the joint-committee hopes that the Government is able to make the right decision on this matter.

TNB is a government-linked company (GLC) which is subjected to the decision made by the Government.

“In view of this matter, TNB Workers Unions will obey and respect any decision made by the Government in determining the leadership and direction of the company – whether to maintain the current leadership or to change it,” it stated.

Amir Hamzah came on board on April 2 last year to succeed Datuk Seri Azman Mohd who resigned on March 31.

The former UEM Edgenta Bhd chairman was appointed to the post on a three-year contract. His tenure is scheduled to come to an end by March 2022. – Dec 16, 2020
