Letter to editor
IN THE bustling world of news media where headlines scream for attention and reporters chase stories like cats after laser pointers, one owner stands out for his remarkable ability to spin a yarn.
Meet “The Generous Boss (TGB)”, the self-proclaimed philanthropist and owner of an illustrious media outlet which has been rather busy in recent months hitting the snooze button on payroll.
TGB is a man of many talents. He can charm the socks off a sock puppet and has a knack for turning even the most mundane incident into a heartfelt TED Talk.
“I’m not just a businessman,” he often declares while sipping artisanal coffee brewed from beans harvested by blindfolded monks in the Himalayas. “I’m a philanthropist!” And indeed, he is. He gives generously – just not to his employees.
As reporters at his news organisation continue to work tirelessly – chasing down stories about local heroes and corrupt politicians – they find themselves in an ironic twist of fate: the real story is their own boss.
With salaries that resemble the change found under couch cushions, staff members have become experts in creative budgeting, often resorting to culinary innovations like karipap kosong (empty curry puff) and “the classic water diet”.
TGB keeps saying he will pay up soon but at this point, everyone is convinced ‘soon’ is a time zone they have never heard of.
Character building
But fear not! TGB has an arsenal of excuses ready to go. When asked about the delay in salaries, he pulls out his favourite line: “It’s all about loyalty!”
Yes, folks, loyalty is the currency of choice with TGB. Forget cash; loyalty is what keeps the lights on and the coffee brewing – at least until TNB (Tenaga Nasional Bhd) cuts the power or Unifi disconnects the internet access due to non-payment.
“Loyalty is priceless,” TGB insists as he doles out motivational speeches that could make Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev weep with envy.
“You see, I’m investing in your future! Every day you work without pay is a day you’re building character.”
Character? At this rate, his employees are set to become the most character-rich individuals on the planet – like superheroes with no superpowers and no pay cheques.
As the weeks turn into months and salaries remain elusive, whispers of rebellion begin to circulate among the staff. Rumour has it that they’re planning a protest – complete with signs that read “Philanthropy Begins at Home” and “Loyalty Doesn’t Pay Rent.”
But TGB assures them that their loyalty will eventually pay off. “Just wait until my next big investment!” he promises as if he’s concocting a scheme involving magic beans.
TGB also announces that he has secured funding for their salaries but the wait continues.
It seems that TGB’s true talent lies in spinning tales that are far more entertaining than any news article his publication could ever publish.
So, here’s to TGB, the philanthropist who gives generously – just not to those who make his dreams possible.
And as for his employees? Well, they’re still waiting for that magical moment when loyalty finally pays off – preferably in cash. – Aug 9, 2024
