In Senegal, a grassroots initiative known as the School of Husbands is challenging deeply rooted gender norms among men. Held weekly in community courtyards, the programme encourages fathers and husbands to question traditional roles at home.
Led by former soldier El Hadj Malick, the discussions aim to promote shared responsibility and mutual respect in families. Backed by the government and the United Nations, the initiative has helped reduce infant and maternal mortality in participating communities.
More than 300 respected men have been trained across 20 schools nationwide. Home visits show real change, with women reporting better communication and shared decision-making.
