Abdul Ghani Salleh retires as EC chairman after 4-year stint

TAN SRI Abdul Ghani Salleh bid farewell to his role as chairman of the Election Commission (EC) yesterday (May 9), marking the conclusion of his four-year tenure at the helm.

The announcement was made through an official posting by the EC on X (formerly Twitter), acknowledging Ghani’s steadfast leadership since assuming the position in August 2020.

“The EC expresses its highest appreciation and thanks to Abdul Ghani for all his contributions and devoted service as chairman of the commission, from Aug 21, 2020 to May 9, 2024,” it said.

Chief Secretary Tan Sri Mohd Zuki Ali had previously indicated that Ghani, who is now 66, would continue to serve as chairman until reaching the retirement age.

Abdul Ghani’s departure comes on the heels of tomorrow’s Kuala Kubu Bharu by-election, which he had referred to as his final task in his capacity as chairman, according to media reports.

Moreover, Abdul Ghani previously served as the Kuala Langat district council chairman and Gombak district officer. – May 10, 2024
