AG Idrus Harun’s tenure gets extended for a year

AFTER much anxiety, Putrajaya announced that Attorney-General (AG) Tan Sri Idrus Harun’s contract has been extended for one more year.

According to Free Malaysia Today, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Mohd Zuki Ali said that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong al-Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah had consented to Idrus’ contract extension, effective from March 6, 2022.

It is to note that Idrus’ contract expired on March 5.

Idrus, who is also Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Azhar Azizan Harun’s brother, was appointed to the post by then-prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin following Tan Sri Tommy Thomas’ resignation following the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan Government in February 2020.

He was serving as a judge in the Federal Court before taking up his appointment as the top public prosecutor of the country.

Two days ago, Bar Council president K Kalidas questioned the Government on delays of appointing a new AG as Idrus’ contract had ended.

“Why the delay in the announcement, given that the AG is such an important position?” he was reported as asking. – March 8, 2022
