Agong summons Anwar, Muhyiddin for audience at 4.30pm

THE Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah will be granting an audience to Pakatan Harapan chairman Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Perikatan Nasional chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin at 4.30pm.

In a statement, Istana Negara acknowledged that no single MP had the simple majority to form the government and become prime minister.

“The Yang di-Pertuan Agong advises the public to be calm and patient until the new government is formed and the country’s 10th prime minister is nominated,” said Comptroller of the Royal Household Datuk Seri Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin.

According to Fadil, Istana Negara received information about the coalition of political parties working together to form the new government after the general election on Saturday.

“After the prime ministerial candidates names were received, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah verified the candidates believed to have majority support in the Dewan Rakyat so as to appoint a new Prime Minister in line with Article 43(2)(a) of the Federal Constitution,” the statement read.

“However, it was found that no member of the Dewan Rakyat has got a simple majority to be appointed Prime Minister.”

PH garnered 82 seats while PN won 73, both short of the 112 needed for a simple majority, which resulted in a hung Parliament, with both PH and PN scrambling for new alliances to gain a simple majority. – Nov 22, 2022
